PERSPECTIVES MISSION STATEMENT
gradbar

The mission of UMKC Perspectives is to communicate the latest information about UMKC's endeavors to the local community, to alumni and to the University's friends nationwide. This communications tool combines news and feature information from a variety of University areas to present a better picture of how the University is meeting its obligations to the community and to higher learning.

The mission of Perspectives is tied closely to the mission, vision, values and goals of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Perspectives will present information in several ways:

  • A main story, which examines a topic of ongoing national or regional importance in which the University, its alumni or its friends are making a major contribution.
  • Three or more feature stories, which outline major events, people or proposals/programs at the University that affect the community or area decision-makers.
  • "Accents," a multi-page section of high profile news items that showcases UMKC people, programs or services.
  • "Conversation," which uses a question-and-answer format to feature an authority on a topic of interest to readers.
  • "Frontlines," which ties updates on University research with how that research will affect the lives of readers.
  • "Nuances," a special column on a relevant topic, written by a prominent guest columnist.
  • "Voices," a special section of the publication that features news of special interest for alumni and friends of the University.

Perspectives is to be an interesting and entertaining source of information that the audience finds easily accessible and readable. While information will be presented from a University perspective, journalistic practices of fairness, accuracy and integrity must ensure truthful coverage of all relevant University news. Controversial subjects of importance to Perspectives readers will be treated in a straightforward, comprehensive manner, with the principle of truth as the primary factor driving story content.

While input from the University community is encouraged, UMKC Perspectives is an editorially autonomous publication, with ultimate authority for story content resting with the vice chancellor for University Advancement.
