Carving’s his niche »

John Killip

Associate dean for student programs
School of Dentistry

Killip turns a nondescript block of wood into a work of art with his carving tools and his imagination. In his spare time outside the classroom and the dental clinic, Killip is a master wood carver. His favorite subjects are ornate character masks and traditional carousel animals. The highlight of his carving career was the creation of all 10 animals for a working carousel that took him about six years to create—all while teaching full time. “My hobby helps me find relaxation,” he says. “The visualization and skills I use while woodworking are expanded concepts of skills I use throughout my professional life.”
