The movements of a dental hygienist are very calculated. But studying dental hygiene at UMKC also taught Jayne Cagle (B.S.D.H. ’81, MSDH ’87) how to innovate.

That innovative thinking contributed to Cagle’s 25-year career in dentistry. It also prepared her for her success as a yoga instructor.

“The skills I learned studying dental hygiene administration are definitely being applied daily as my yoga business grows,” Cagle says. “I greatly value the encouragement I received to think out of the box.”

At One Joyful Yoga in Chattanooga, Tenn., Cagle leads both traditional yoga classes and standup paddleboard classes, where students practice their poses and balance on paddleboards floating on the waters of Waconda Bay.

Cagle credits her UMKC education with giving her the confidence she needed to navigate two careers.

“It afforded me the opportunity to mature, become more self-reliant and attain professional skills that no other program or faculty could.”

Cagle says she still lives by two principles learned in her first semester at UMKC: Utilize your resources and develop rapport.

Just like in dentistry, Cagle is constantly refining her yoga skills. She regularly attends teachers’ retreats and conducts self-evaluation, another skill she connects to her study and practice of dental hygiene.

As for a “favorite” yoga pose, Cagle says it depends on her mood.

“My favorite yoga pose would be the one that best brings me into balance.” She adds, “Chest Openers when I’m feeling sad and closed in by something. Forward bends when I require introspection. Standing poses when I require a sense of grounding. Twists when I require a fire to digest.”
