The building on UMKC’s Volker campus that many alumni remember as University Center unveiled a new look and purpose this fall. The building was remodeled, renamed and dedicated as the Atterbury Student Success Center (SSC). It now houses various student support and academic services aimed at increasing student retention, including UMKC Central. The SSC is also home to University College, a new academic unit designed to connect incoming undeclared or students exploring which major to choose with support and give them exposure to faculty and staff from different academic units. UCollege also hosts UNIV 101, a course required of all incoming students that helps them cultivate key academic skills, interact with faculty mentors and progress toward identifying an academic plan.
Everything they need, all in one spot
Students were loud and clear that they wanted a one-stop shop to take care of their core business transactions, and UMKC answered the call. UMKC Central is a place for students to take care of their needs in five key areas. New with the opening of the Atterbury Student Success Center this fall, the staff is cross-trained in a variety of functions to help make the student experience a breeze. In one convenient location, UMKC Central offers:
Cashier

Financial aid
Houses information about scholarships and financial assistance
Records and transcripts
Fulfills transcript requests; gathers enrollment requirements and course schedules

With these key services in one spot, students can get help with problems, gain additional information to manage the enrollment process or perform transactions to meet their academic and financial objectives. Plus, UMKC Central provides students with one focal point for answering questions and getting assistance. Student inquiries are generated electronically, making it easy for staff members to follow through and ensure students’ issues are resolved.
