Carole McArthur

Professor of Oral Biology
School of Dentistry

McArthur was attending the American Royal in 1991 when she saw actor William Shatner, a well-known show-horse enthusiast, riding what she described as an electrifying sight and the most beautiful horse she had ever seen. That was the moment that inspired her to train, ride and breed her own American Saddlebred horses. Over the past 20 years, McArthur’s horses have become her passion and her escape from the stress of an often-chaotic research and teaching schedule. “The American Saddlebred is poetry in motion,” she says. “It’s powerful, intelligent and beautiful. I’ve never seen an ugly Saddlebred. I love the excitement and the challenge of getting the horse to do what one wants, and there’s hardly any paperwork!”
